Non-infectious diseases (1) Flashcards
What are non-infectious diseases caused by?
Genetic
Nutrition and metabolism
Intoxications
Trauma
Hypersensitivity
Auto-immunity
Combinations of these and others
What is laminitis?
An inflammation of the corium of the hoof
What are the causes of laminitis?
Inflammations
EMD and PPID
Trauma to the hoove
Sepsis/endotoxins (the presence of bacteria inside the bloodstream)
What is hypocalcemia?
Low magnesium, glucose, and/or phosphorus
What is fatty liver syndrome?
A range of conditions caused by build-up fat in the liver
What is Equine metabolic disease?
An inability to properly metabolize dietary carbohydrates
What is EMD caused by?
Insulin resistance -> rise in insulin
Fat tissue -> inflammatory mediators, leptin -> leptin resistance -> PPID
Feeding saturated fat and fructan
What are the symptoms of EMD?
BCS 6-9
Cresty neck
Laminitis
Increased appetite
Infertility
How can EMD be treated?
Diet and exercise
What is PPID?
A dysregulation of hormone functions (cushing)
*Low dopamine release
*Increased size of the pituitary pars intermedia -> overactive, makes for a high release of ACTH (cortisol)
What are symptoms of PPID?
Older horses
Fat deposits (eyes)
Obesity
Curly long hair
Laminitis
Increased appetite
PUPD -> lots of eating and drinking
Decreased resistance
Sweating
Laziness
How can PPID be treated?
A dopamine drug
