General characteristics
A
Aerobic non fermentative rods
- acinetobacter spp. And Moraxella spp. Appear also as coccobacilli and cocci
- Non-fastidious
- Inhabit soil and water
- An important role in the decomposition of organic matter
- Very adaptive organisms
- Can be isolated from many sites in the hospitals environment:
Respiratory care equipment
Baths
Water faucets
Floors
“In disinfectant solutions” - resistant to chemical disinfection
- resistant to commonly used anti microbial drugs
- several species are pathogenic for plants and animals
-some species are important opportunistic pathogens that infect individuals with impaired host defence - human infection usually are severe and difficult to treat
