General characteristics

A

Aerobic non fermentative rods
- acinetobacter spp. And Moraxella spp. Appear also as coccobacilli and cocci

  • Non-fastidious
  • Inhabit soil and water
  • An important role in the decomposition of organic matter
  • Very adaptive organisms
  • Can be isolated from many sites in the hospitals environment:
    Respiratory care equipment
    Baths
    Water faucets
    Floors
    “In disinfectant solutions”
  • resistant to chemical disinfection
  • resistant to commonly used anti microbial drugs
  • several species are pathogenic for plants and animals
    -some species are important opportunistic pathogens that infect individuals with impaired host defence
  • human infection usually are severe and difficult to treat
