Reservoire: intestinal tract of poultry

A

Gram negative rods

Comma, spiral or “Gull-winged” appearance

Motile —> single polar flagellum

Growth characteristics

A

Microaerophilic: grows best in the presence of 5% O2 + 10% CO2

Thermophilic:
Grows well at 42oC (expect C.fetus)

Oxidase & catalase positive

Do not ferment carbohydrate

Disease

A

Enterocolitis - bloody diarrhea

Guillain-Barré syndrome = ascending paralysis
»> demyelination of peripheral nerves (from lower limbs to head)

Reactive arthritis = “rider’s syndrome”

Bacteremia: due to invasiveness

Laboratory diagnosis

A

Microscopy: Gram-stained smear

Culture: in special agar (e.g. Skirrow’s agar) at 42oC in high-CO2, low O2 atmosphere

Serologic tests not useful

Treatment and prevention

A

Treatment:

  • usually symptomatic treatment only
  • erythromycin for severe disease

Prevention:

  • public health measures (e.g. sewage disposal, chlorination of water supply, hand washing prior to food handling)
  • no prevention vaccine or drug is available
