Cause septicemia/bacteremia
Disease
Enterocolitis - bloody diarrhea
Guillain-Barré syndrome = ascending paralysis
»> demyelination of peripheral nerves (from lower limbs to head)
Reactive arthritis = “rider’s syndrome”
Bacteremia: due to invasiveness
Laboratory diagnosis
Microscopy: Gram-stained smear
Culture: in special agar (e.g. Skirrow’s agar) at 42oC in high-CO2, low O2 atmosphere
Serologic tests not useful
Treatment and prevention
Treatment:
- usually symptomatic treatment only
- erythromycin for severe disease
Prevention:
- public health measures (e.g. sewage disposal, chlorination of water supply, hand washing prior to food handling)
- no prevention vaccine or drug is available
