Non-Communicable Disease, Cancer Flashcards
What is cancer?
A non-communicable disease where the control of the cell cycle is lost. Cancerous cells divide uncontrollably and remain undifferentiated and leads to tumours forming.
Benign tumour
In one area of the body. Can grow quickly and damage organs.
Malignant tumour
Spreads around the body by invading healthy tissue. More dangerous because it is uncontainable so cancerous cells can break off.
How does Malignant tumours spread?
Via blood and lymph
Risk factors of cancer
Age, lifestyle risks and genetic risks.
Causes of cancer
Carcinogen, ionising radiation, viral infections and genetics.
Carcinogen
Chemical that damages DNA found in tobacco smoke, Alcohol and burnt food.
Ionising radiation
UV light from the sun, X-rays and radioactive materials - skin cancer
How to treat cancer
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy
Chemotherapy
Chemicals which makes the cancerous cells self destruct or stop dividing.
Radiotherapy
Radiation destroys cancer cells and healthy cells by stopping division
