Low doses given to healthy volunteers. Tests for sideffects.

Low dose given to small number of Patients - test for effectiveness and optimum doses.
Clinical trials Phase III
Doses given to larger group of controlled patients through double blind trials and placebo - validity and reliability of data.
Double blind
Neither the patient or doctor whether it is the actual drug or a placebo
Digitalis (heart drug)
Extracted from Foxgloves. Strengthens heart beat
Aspirin (painkiller)
Extracted from Willow bark. Pain and anti-inflammatory properties.
Penicillin (antibiotic)
Extracted from Pencillium notatum fungus.
