Q

rules for naming organic compounds

A
  1. count the carbons in the longest continuous chain that contains the functional group which gives you the stem
  2. the main functional group gives you the suffix
  3. number the carbons in the longest chain so the carbon with the functional group attached has the lowest possible number
  4. write the carbon number that the functional group is on before the suffix
  5. any side chains are added as prefixes and put them in alphabetical order
  6. if there’s more than one identical side chain use di, tri, tetra but ignore this when working out the alphabetical order
