NOMENCLATURE Flashcards
1
Q
what is nomenclature
A
naming compounds
2
Q
what system do chemists use for naming compounds
A
IUPAC
3
Q
characteristics of homologous groups
A
same general formula
same chemical reactions
same functional group
molecules increase by CH2
4
Q
rules for naming organic compounds
A
- count the carbons in the longest continuous chain that contains the functional group which gives you the stem
- the main functional group gives you the suffix
- number the carbons in the longest chain so the carbon with the functional group attached has the lowest possible number
- write the carbon number that the functional group is on before the suffix
- any side chains are added as prefixes and put them in alphabetical order
- if there’s more than one identical side chain use di, tri, tetra but ignore this when working out the alphabetical order

Q
rules for naming organic compounds
A
use commas between numbers
use dashes between numbers and letters
