NMS II- vascular Flashcards
when does anterior compartment syndrome occur?
occurs after trauma, exercise or infection
what are the signs and symptoms of anterior compartment syndrome?
red, glassy, warm, tender, peroneal N sensory loss, foot drop
volkmann’s ischemia
swelling leads to tissue necrosis
ankle brachial index procedure
compare systolic pressure of arm and ankle
divide ankle pressure by arm pressure
when the ankel brachial index is positive, what does that mean?
drop in LE pressure with arterial occlusion of posterior tibial or dorsal pedis A
what are the ranges for ankle brachial index?
> 1.3 noncompressible
0.91-1.3 normal
0.41-0.9 mild to moderate peripheral artery disease
0-0.4 severe peripheral artery disease
___% of people greater than 55 have some sort of arterial problem
10
__% have intermittent claudication
5
__% have ischemia
1
DVT
constant, sudden onset, swelling, burning, aching, increase pressure in leg
MC femoral vein
what should we do with those who we think have a DVT?
send them to the ER for anticoagulent and blood thinner
intermittent claudication
pain with walking or using more muscle, relieved by rest
lack of blood supply
what types of clots can people with intermittent claudication have?
hard clot (older people) soft clot (younger people)
what should you do with someone who has intermittent claudication?
send them to the ER, get an angiogram
what vascular diseases can feel better with relaxation?
valvular insufficiency
free floating crystalline sugars
