Environmental Protection Agency. Established by Nixon, it was an agency of the United States federal government whose mission is to protect human and environmental health.
OSHA
Occupational Safety and Health Act. This ensured safe and healthful working conditions for workers by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education, and assistance.
Clean Water Act of 1970
US legislation enacted in 1972 to restore and maintain clean and healthy waters. It was a response to increasing public concern for the environment and for the condition of the nation’s water.
Détente
A period in which Cold War tensions eased between the Soviet Union and the United States from the late 60s to 1979. Characterized by a warm lersonal relationship between Nixon (US) and Brezhnev (SU)
SALT
Strategic Arms Limitations Act. Negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union that were aimed at curtailing the manufacture of strategic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons
6-Day War
A short war fought in June of 1967 between Israel and the United Arab States of Egypt, Syria, amd Jordan.
Pentagon Papers
A study of the origins amd development of the Vietnam War in 1967. Found secrets about the Vietnam war that were not reported in the mainstream media.
Watergate
A major political scandal in the US involving the administration of president Richard Nixomn from 1972 to 1974 that led to Nixon’s resignation.
National Energy Act of 1978
Declared the policy of the United States that the Federal Government has the responsibility to promote the use of energy conservation and solar heating and cooling in federal buildings.
Panama Canal Treaty
This treaty relinquishes American control over the Panama Canal by the year 2000 and guarantees its neutrality. The treaty was signed by President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian Cheif of Government Omar Torrijos.
Camp David Accords
Established a framework for a historic peace treaty concluded between Israel and Egypt in March 1979. Signed by President Jimmy Carter, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in September 1978.
Iranian Hostage Crisis
On November 4th, 1979, Iranian militants stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran and took aproximately 70 Americans captive. This terrorist act triggered the most profound crisis of the Carter presidency and began a personal ordeal for Jimmy Carter and the American people that lasted 444 days.
