NIV Flashcards
What are the types of Non Invasive ventilation?
CPAP
BIPAP
What is HFO?
High flow oxygen is used in type 1 RF (Without hypercapnia) delivered through Nasal cannulae
reduces work of breathing by improving gaseous exchange
What is CPAP?
Used in Type 1 Respiratory Failure without Hypercapnia
Prevents alveolar collapse by giving Constant Positive Alveolar Pressure
Improves oxygen delivery to pulmonary capillaries
What is BIPAP?
Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure
Used in Type 2 respiratory failure (Hypoxia and Hypercapnia)
Delivers IPAP and EPAP (Different pressures for inspiration and expiration)
What is CPAP used to treat?
Pneumonia, ARDS, Pulmonary fibrosis
Helps to avoid intubation and mechanical ventilation
What is BIPAP Used to treat?
COPD, Covid-19
pre-exisiting lung injury can be worsened by use of BIPAP
How does CPAP work?
Increases the alveolar-cappilary refill time so more carbon dioxide-oxygen perfusion
Treats collapsed alveoli
