Nitrogen, Phosphorus, & HABs Flashcards
Vital for plant growth
N (nitrogen), P (phosphorus), and K (potassium)
What is a primary nutrient critical for survival?
Nitrogen; important component of nucleic acids and proteins
What is a function of phosphorus?
makes nucleic acids and the phospholipids comprising biological membranes
Phospholipid bilayer
two layers of phospholipids that make up the cell or plasma membrane; proteins embedded in lipid bilayer
Why do plants need nitrogen?
enables growth, each molecule of chlorophyll contains 4 nitrogen molecules (important for photosynthetic ability)
2 most common limiting nutrients
nitrogen and phosphorus
Limiting nutrients
the nutrient that’s in shortest supply and limits growth; needed for growth
Chemical forms of N and P taken up by environment
Nitrogen gas (N2) from atmosphere
Phosphate (PO43-), dihydrogen phosphate (H2PO42-), and hydrogen phosphate (HPO42-)
Which organisms can fix nitrogen?
Humans cannot
Bacteria and Archaea can (both prokaryotes)
Heterocysts (specialized cells of cyanobacteria) can
Some plants (mainly legumes because they have N-fixing bacteria in roots as endosymbionts)
maybe fungi (?)
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate (3 phosphate groups); critical energy source for cells, without it we would not be able to function and would die
