Nitrogen Family Flashcards
1
Q
Nitric Acid
A
HNO3 is a colorless liquid with boiling point of 86 degrees Celsius. Miscible w/ water in all proportions.
Rarely produces hydrogen when reacted with metals since it is unstable and decomposes easily. Good oxidizing agent.
Concentrated HNO3 + Cu forms NO2 (heavy, red-brown, smelly gas) but Dilute HNO3 + Cu forms NO (colorless, immediately oxidized into NO2). Most dilute HNO3 may form N2O; w/ active metal, NH4+ may form.

Q
Nitrogen
A
Colorless, odorless, tasteless, rather inactive (b/c triple covalent bond) gas. 79% of the air is N2.
