Metals Flashcards
Iron Ore
Refined by reduction in blast furnace, molten iron in blast furnace called pig iron.
Three Ways of Making Steel
Basic Oxygen Furnace
Open-Hearth Furnace
Electric Arc Furnace
Alloys
Mixture of two or more metals.
Melting point of alloys are LOWER than its components’ melting points
Hardness increases in alloys
Size of crystalline particles determine physical properties of alloy (cooled slowly=larger crystals)
Common Alloys
Brass: copper and zinc
Bronze: copper and tin
Steel: controlled amounts of carbon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus, and silicon, alloyed with nickel and the chromium
Sterling silver: alloyed with copper
Metalloids
Form ionic or covalent bonds
Semiconductors
Properties of Metals
Metallic Luster Conduct heat and electricity Malleable (can form sheets) Ductile (can form wires) Silvery (most) Insoluble w/o chemical change/in typical solvents
