Nitrogen 3 - Inherited Metabolic Disorders Flashcards
What pattern of inheritance do most inherited metabolic disorders show?
autosomal recessive inheritance
Give 4 examples of common clinical features of inherited metabolic disorders.
- acidosis
- vomiting, refusal of feeds, irritability
- hypoglycaemia
- central nervous system dysfunction
Between what structures is the urea cycle split?
mitochondrial matrix and cytosol
Where does the urea cycle (primarily) occur?
the liver
What is the most common urea cycle disorder?
ornithine transcarbamoylase (OTC)
What kind of pattern of inheritance does OTC have?
X linked inheritance
What clinical feature characterises OTC?
hyperammonaemia - is a medical emergency that typically presents in newborn period
What is one of the more common amino acid disorders?
phenylketoneuria (PKU)
How is phenylketonuria treated?
reduced protein diet supplemented with tyrosine
What causes PKU?
phenylalanine is unable to be converted to tyrosine so the toxic byproducts of the build up of phenylalanine causes problems
How is PKU diagnosed?
positive screening test
