Nisus and Euryalus part 2 (308-323)

Question 1

protinus armati incedunt; quos omnis euntis

primorum manus ad portas, iuvenumque senumque,

prosequitur votis.

Answer 1

Armed, they advanced straight away; the whole band of leaders,

both young and old men, escorted them as they went to the gates,

with prayers.

Question 2

nec non et pulcher Iulus,

ante annos animumque gerens curamque virilem,

multa patri mandata dabat portanda; sed aurae

omnia discerpunt et nubibus inrita donant.

Answer 2

And no less handsome, Iulus,

displaying beyond his years both the spirit and worry of a man,

was giving many instructions to be carried to his father; but the breezes

scattered them all and gave them in vain to the clouds.

Egressi superant fossas noctisque per umbram

castra inimicum petunt, multis tamen ante futuri,

exitio.

“Euryalus, deeds of daring need a (strong) right hand: now the situation itself calls for this.

haec ego vasta dabo et lato te limite ducam.”
