NIPPV Flashcards

Q

list common indications NIPPV

A

elevated respiratory rate, dyspnoea, increased WOB & use of accessory muscles,
decreased SpO2(below 90% on high flow),
PaCO2 greater than 45mmHg,
acidosis (pH below 7.35),
to prevent intubation. (sleep apnoea, APO, pneumonia, atelectasis, neuromuscular disorders)

Q

Definition NIPPV

A

Definition: the provision of ventilator support to the spontaneously breathing patient who is at risk of developing acute respiratory distress or has chronic respiratory disease.
Types
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) : delivers a constant gas pressure to the airway during inspiration and expiration. This additional pressure, improves tidal volumes and provides expiratory resistance, which helps recruit and maintain open alveoli, preventing lung collapse, making re-expansion of the chest easier, therefore reducing WOB.
Bi level positive airway pressure (BiPAP): provides pressure support during inspiration and expiration at different levels
