What are Public Schools?
These are schools such as Eton, Harrow and Rugby School. These schools were all boys schools, boarding and owned by a body of trustees. The boys who attended were prepared for future leadership roles and had a major impact of the development, promotion and organisation of sports and games.
How did Public Schools help to DEVELOP team games?
Schools had money to build facilities and employ assistant masters to help with games each afternoon. They employed professional coaches so standards were high. There was lots of free time after lessons to practice and develop skills. Many schools had vast grounds for pitches.
How did Public Schools help to ORGANISE team games?
The boys did a lot of the organising themselves. The house captain would put up daily team lists and encourage participation. Headmasters encourages participation to keep boys out of trouble. House fixtures and eventually fixture between schools became common.
Explain what happened when ex-public school boys left school to PROMOTE team games?
The boys took their passion with them upon leaving school. They became vicars, teachers, industrialists, community leaders, parents and army officers spreading the values and associated benefits of team games and sports.
Explain what is meant by the house system
The system of pastoral care in nineteenth century public schools. Boys lived in boarding house which became the centre of their sporting and social life. Houses in modern schools evolved from this system.
How did the British Empire influence the spread of team games?
The spread of British forms of government, religion and culture lead to sport being taken to all parts of the world. e.g. cricket test playing nations.
Describe what National Governing Bodies are and explain how they were formed.
Organisations that look after all aspects of their individual sports, e.g. The Football Association, were oftener formed by ex-public schoolboys looking to enhance and continue sporting competitions.
