Define Mass Participation
This is an inclusive concept where taking part is more important than winning. Physical activity is pursued for health, fitness or enjoyment. The benefit of mass participation is that it enlarges the pool from which talent can be drawn. The idea is that everyone should have the chance to take part in sport.
Define Sporting Excellence
This involves elite or professional, highly skilled and committed performers taking part at national or international level to win. This is a selective or exclusive idea - very few make it to the top.
Explain the layers of the Sports Development Pyramid
Foundation - children being introduced to sport, learning of basic skills
Participation - school or club participation, recreational, emphasis on enjoyment health and fitness
Performance - more formal, emphasis on competition and winning, committed performers, training regularly to improve, receive coaching
Excellence - elite performers at national or international level, high levels of coaching and support (sport science), fully committed may be full time or professional
Define Opportunity
Having the chance to take part/or get to the top e.g. disposable income for mass participation or funding for sporting excellence. Time, Ability etc
Define Provision
Having the conditions or physical tools to take part/or get to the top. e.g. suitable facilities and equipment for mass participation or world class facilities for sporting excellence. Transport, coaching, clubs etc
Define Esteem
Issues to do with confidence, respect admiration and appreciation. e.g. self confidence to join a club for mass participation or self belief to progress towards sporting excellence. Respect, Perceptions, Status etc
Outline the factors affecting participation
Family - Do parents and siblings support participation?
Gender - what is stoping women?
Age - what clubs are provided?
Socio-economic status - can you afford it?
Friends - are you influenced by your peer group?
Location - are there facilities and clubs?
School - did you have a positive or negative experience?
Race or religion - negative attitude towards sport
What is meant by discrimination?
Unfair treatment of certain groups in society
List the 5 minority groups that are most likely to suffer from discrimination
Young people The Elderly People with disabilities Women Ethnic Minorities
Describe possible measures to increase participation and sporting excellence
Raise awareness Promote positive role models Provide facilities Ensure equality of access Provide specialist training for coaches Smash myths and reduce ignorance Develop media coverage Increase funding PLUS SPECIFIC MEASURES FOR EACH MINORITY GROUP
