What is Public Funding?
Funding from the government and local authorities including the National Lottery
What is Private Funding?
Funding from businesses, investors and companies whose aim is to make money. They fund sport to increase status and profit.
What is Voluntary Funding?
Funding from donations, charities or local clubs that exist for their members.
Explain the term Decentralised and how this impacts on the organisation of sport in the UK
Decentralised is when parts of a system are self governing or power is not centrally held.
Positive - limited outside interference for NGBs and sports associations.
Negative - everyone ‘does their own thing’ with no coordinated focus.
Describe a ‘grass roots’ club
These are community clubs that exist for people at the base of the Sports Development Pyramid.
Explain the impact of the National Lottery on sports funding
The Lottery Sports Fund provides grants of over £200 million annually. These grants go to, and are distributed by, UK Sport and the home country sports councils. This money supports both mass participation and sporting excellence.
Explain the role of UK Sport
UK Sport wants world class success! It is responsible for developing elite sport in the UK and is funded by the government.
What does UK Sport do?
Manages and distributes investment
Coordinates programmes to attract major sporting events
Helps elite performers - ‘performance lifestyle’
Promotes ethical standards - anti-doping programmes
Runs World Class Coaching Strategy

Explain the role of Home Country Organisations, e.g. Sport England and The Sports Council for Wales
These bodies are funded by the government and National Lottery. They are responsible for community sport and mass participation. Each of the home conceals want people to start getting active and stay being active.
What do the Home Country Organisations do?
Increase opportunities to take part in community sport and recreation
Promotes volunteering, coaching, leadership and officiating
Develops school/club links
Uses sport to fight obesity
Works closely with NGBs and clubs to increase participation and create pathways

Explain the role of National Governing Bodies
Each individual sport is controlled by a National governing Body (NGB). These will control an individual sport e.g Badminton England.
In general what do NGBs do?
Encourage participation and train coaches, officials etc
Develop talent and select county, regional and national squads, selecting individuals for World Class Funding
Promote the sport, deal with discipline issues and maintain rules and regulations
Control finances and work with other organisations.
