What are the private pilot requirements for night flying?
3 hours dual instruction, 100 miles cross country, 10 takeoffs and 10 full stop landings
What is dark adaptation?
When the pilot’s eyes adjust to lower light levels of night flying
What is required of fuses during flight?
A spare set of at least three fuses must be on board
What are the beacon colors for a civilian airport? Military airport?
White and Green / White, White, and Green
What do red lights on the airport mark?
Buildings or obstructions
What are runway threshold lights? Colors?
Lights aligning with the end of the runway that are green on the takeoff side, red on the approach side
What is REIL?
Runway Edge Indicator Lights
What are the colors of the airplane lights and what do they indicate?
Red is left wing and means you see an airplane is moving right to left and has right of way / White or flashing white is the tail / Green is right wing and means you see an airplane is moving left to right and you have the right of way / Both red and green means aircraft is approaching head on
When must navigation lights be on?
Anytime flight happens between sunset and sunrise
How do regulations define the time for night?
End of civil twilight to beginning of morning twilight
How does a pilot activate radio controlled lighting?
Keying the microphone key on the appropriate frequency (7 clicks in five seconds to activate high intensity lights)
What is VASI?
Visual Approach Slope Indicator, provides pilots with indication of whether they are on the proper approach glideslope
What is the approach glideslope angle provided by VASI (standard)?
3 degrees to the horizontal
What is PAPI?
Precision Approach Path Indicator, when all four lights are in a row
What is a tricolor visual approach indicator?
A single light that changes colors based on glidepath
