Nicotinic Antagonists Flashcards
nicotonic antagonists are
neuromuscular blockers action at neuromuscular junction
nicotinic anatagonists MOA
non depolarizing or depolarizing
movement of calcium in and out of the cell causes
contraction of the muscle or depolarization
the end result of depolarizing and non-depolarizing is the same,
paralysis of the muscle
depolarizing nicotinic antagonist prototype
succinylcholine - fast acting - transient contractions
what gets rid of succinycholine in the body
pseudocholinesterase
when would you use succinycholine
intubation or ECT or endoscopy (in and out of the body very quickly - rapid action)
neuromuscular blockers have a + charge meaning
they don’t cross the blood-brain barrier
**if you only get a neuromuscular blocker are you conscious or unconscious
conscious but completely paralyzed - never given alone!
succinylcholine plus an inhaled agent if person is genetically susceptible can cause
malignant hyperthermia (high temp)
