In the aftermath of the assault, Nicole feels betrayed by Francis because he did nothing to intervene.

When Francis arrives at the convent, this is what Nicole’s first reaction is. This could perhaps be a sign that their relationship didn’t mean as much to her as it did to him.

“Her face reminded me of the statue of St Thérèse.”
Francis’s first description of Nicole. St Thérèse is the patron saint of the orphans so this quote demonstrates the special connection between the two.

“I silently pledge her my love and loyalty for ever.”
When Francis sees Nicole, he instantly feels a desire to be with her and protect her forever.
