Francis: “He had been a hero to us long before he went to war.”

Francis: “I am not a hero, of course”

Arthur: “You’re a goddam hero.”
“There are no heroes in that scrapbook, Francis.”

Francis: “[they] fought the good war. And never talk about it. And didn’t receive a Silver Star. But heroes, anyway. The real heroes.”
At the end of the novel, Francis resolves that winning awards cannot determine whether someone is a hero or not. Often it is the unsung heroes who deserve the most respect.
