Confronting Evil Flashcards
F: “T o [s] c M a m g c h i h.”
Francis: “The other [soldier] cries Mama as my gunfire cuts him in half.”
The true face of the evil Francis is fighting isn’t at all sinister. The faces of those he kills still haunt him.
F: “B w a c t y t s… L m.”
Francis: “Boys with Apple cheeks too young to shave… Like me.”
Francis finds that this enemy is a lot more personable than he thought and this idea scares him and stays with him.
F: “a f a a.”
Francis: “A fake all along.”
Francis discards the idea of heroism and is purely betrayed by Larry. That is why he must confront him.
F: “W c o f a b a h w H c o t s.”
Francis: “We cheered our fighting forces and booed and hissed when Hitler came on the screen.”
In Frenchtown, confronting the evil of the Nazis is more of a game to the children than a serious issue.
F: “S h h t w h b N a m.”
“Shatter his heart the way he broke Nicole’s and mine.”
Francis is ultimately seeking revenge. Again it’s a selfish motive.
F: “T w i n a c o m b.”
Francis: “The weight is nice and comfortable on my back.”
Whereas his duffle bag was described as tumour-like earlier in the novel, Francis has learned to live with his demons by the end.
