Newtons laws Flashcards
1
Q
What is linear motion ?
A
Motion in a straight or curved line where all body parts are all moving at the same speed, distance and direction.
E.g. = the 100m sprint
2
Q
What is newton’s first law ?
A
- ‘the law of inertia’
- If an object is at rest it will stay at rest.
- If an object is in motion it will continue to move at the same velocity until a force is applied
- The bigger the mass, the larger the inertia will be which means a larger force is needed to change the state of motion
3
Q
What are push and pull ?
A
- They can alter a body in multiple ways:
1. Causes a body to move
2. Causes a body to accelerate
3. Causes a body to decelerate
4. Causes a body to change direction
5. Causes a body to change shape (e.g a golf ball changes shape when hit)
4
Q
What is newton’s second law ?
A
- The size and direction of a force applied to the body determine the size and direction of acceleration
- The rate of acceleration is directly proportional to the force
- The masses involved remain constant and then acceleration is equal to the size of the force causing it
- E.g. If you kick a football hard, it will go far
- Every object has a mass and veloci and the product is momentum
5
Q
Equation of momentum ?
A
Momentum = mass * velocity
6
Q
Equation for Newton’s second law ?
A
Force = mass * acceleration
7
Q
What is Newton’s 3rd law ?
A
- ‘Every action has an equal and opposite reaction’
- This always occurs in pairs
E.g. a sprint start
Action = Athlete pushing on the blocks
Reaction = Blocks push athletes forwards
8
Q
What is a ground force reaction ?
A
- A force exerted on the ground by the body in contact with it
