Centre of mass Flashcards
What is a centre of mass
- point of concentration of mass (the point of balance)
- centre of mass is around the navel (slightly lower for women)
- As the body moves, so does the centre of mass
- E.g. Raising your arm, raises the centre of mass
What are the 4 factors that affect the centre of mass ?
- The height of the centre of mass
- Position of the line of gravity
- Area of support base
- Mass of the performer
How does the hight of the centre of mass affecr stability ?
Lowering it increases stability
How does the position of the line of gravity affect stability ?
Should be central over the base of support to increase stability
How does the area of the support base affect the stability ?
The more contact points, the more stability.
E.g. A headstand is easier to hold than a handstand
How does the mass of the performer affect the stability ?
The greater the mass, the more stability there is because of inertia
How do American footballers/ rugby players have their centre of mass ?
- Lower there centre of the mass closer to the ground
- means that more force is required to shift
What does a torque do ?
Produces rotation
