Linear motion Flashcards
Scalar quantity
When measurements are discussed by just their size or quantity.
E.g Mass, distance, speed
Speed
The rate of a change of position and can be calculated.
Speed = distance / time
Distance
The length of the path a body follows when moving from one position to another
Vector quantity
When measurements are described in terms of magnitude and direction
E.g. weight, momentum, acceleration, displacement
Mass
Physical quantity which shows the amount of matter or substance in the body
Doesn’t have a direction, just size
Weight
Mass x gravity
Has direction from the gravity so this is a vector quantity
Measured in Newtons
Displacement
- Describes direction as well as size
- Measured in metres but it is the shortest distance between the start and finish
What is the equation for speed ?
Speed = distance / time
What is the equation for velocity ?
Velocity = displacement / time taken
What is the equation for mass ?
Mass = Weight / gravity
What is the value of gravity on earth ?
9.8
Acceleration
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.
It is a vector quantity
Is measured in m/s (squared)
How do you calculate acceleration ?
Acceleration = change in velocity / time
How is a change in velocity calculated ?
Final velocity - initial velocity
Momentum ?
Momentum is the product of the mass and velocity of an object
