Newton's laws and application of those Flashcards
Normal force
force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it. Acts perpendicular to a surface irrespective of whether the plane is horizontal or inclined
Frictional force
Force that opposes the motion of an object and it acts parallel to the surface the object it is in contact with
Newton’s first law of motion
A body will remain in its state of motion (at rest or moving at constant velocity) until a net force acts on it
Newton’s second law of motion
When a non-zero net force acts on an object, the object will accelerate in the direction of the net force. Acceleration is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object
Newton’s third law of motion
When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body exerts a force of equal magnitude in the opposite direction of the first body
Newton’s law of universal gravitation
Each body in the universe attracts every other body with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres
Weight
Gravitational force the Earth exerts on any object on or near its surface
