Acids and Bases Flashcards
Acid according to Arrhenius
A substance that produces H+ ions in water
Base according to Arrhenius
A substance that produces OH- ions in water
Strong acid
Ionise completely in water to produce a high concentration of H3O+ ions
Eg. HCL, H2SO4 or HNO3
Weak acid
Ionise incompletely in water to form a low concentration of H30+ ions
Eg. ethanoic acid, oxalic acid
Strong base
Dissociate completely in water
eg. NaOH, KOH
Weak base
Dissociates/ionises incompletely in water to form a low concentration of OH- ions
eg. ammonia, calcium carbonate, potassium carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate
Acid according to Lowry-Bronsted
Proton (H+) donor
Base according to Lowry-Bronsted
Proton (H+) acceptor
Concentrated Acid/Base
Large amount (number of moles) of Acid or base in proportion to volume of water
Dilute Acid or base
Small amount (number of moles) of Acid/base in proportion to volume of water
Amphiprotic
Substance that can act as an acid or base
