Newton's law of motion Flashcards
What are the three Newton’s laws?
1st - Law of inertia
2nd - Law of acceleration
3rd - Law of action and reaction
What is Newton’s first law?
Law of inertia
What is Newton’s second law?
Law of acceleration
What is Newton’s third law?
Law of action and reaction
Define inertia
The resistance an object has to change its state of motion
How can inertia be overcome?
By applying an external force
What increases along with inertia?
Mass
What does the law of inertia state?
That everything has a resistance to whatever it is doing
Give a sporting example of the law of inertia
A football will remain on the penalty spot until kicked
State what the law of acceleration is
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force acting on it.
Basically, the greater the force applied, the greater the acceleration of the object will be
What is acceleration directly proportional to?
The force acting upon it
What does force govern?
Direction!!
What occurs once acceleration ceases?
Momentum
Give a sporting example of the law of acceleration
When a footballer kicks (force) the ball on the penalty spot, the acceleration of the ball (rate of change of velocity) is equal to the size of the force. So, the harder the ball is kicked, the faster it will go in the direction the force has been applied (as force governs direction)
What does the law of action and reaction state?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Basically there are always two forces acting upon each other
