Newton’s 1st Law Flashcards
Define “Newton’s first law”.
An object that is at rest, stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external/unbalanced force.
What are the 2 scenarios that can happen if the forces are balanced?
- The object is at rest (v = 0m/s) stays at rest
2. The object is in uniform motion (v is not equal to 0m/s) stays in motion (same velocity and direction)
Define “inertia”.
The tendency of an object to resist changes in its velocity, whether in motion or motionless
What are the 3 types of inertia?
- Inertia of rest
- Inertia of direction
- Inertia of motion
Define “equilibrium”.
If the size and direction of the forces acting on an object are exactly balanced and there is no net force acting on the object, the object is therefore in equilibrium
