Motion(Speed, Velocity, Acceleration) Flashcards
Define mechanics
Branch of physics that focuses on the motion of objects and the forces that cause the motion of change
Define kinematics
Description of how objects move
Define dynamics
Deals with force and why objects move as they do
Define motion
Phenomenon in which an object changes its position over time. Is mathematically described as displacement, distance, velocity, acceleration, speed and time.
Define distance
Scalar quantity that refers to how much ground an object covers during its motion
Define displacement
Vector quantity that refers to how far out of place an object is; the object’s overall change
What is the formula for displacement?
Displacement = final position - initial position
Define speed
Scalar quantity that refers to how fast an object is going. Speed is not always consistent and usually changes over time.
What is the formula for average speed?
Average speed = total distance/total time
Define velocity
Vector quantity that refers to how fast an object is moving and in which direction.
What is the formula for velocity?
Velocity = (final position - initial position)/time
What is the formula for average velocity?
Average velocity = displacement/time
Define acceleration
Any process when velocity changes
What is the formula for average acceleration?
Average acceleration = change in velocity/time
