Newman Projections Flashcards
How do you know if something is saturated?
It has no double bonds
How do you know if something is unsaturated?
It has multiple double bonds
Do single or double bonds rotate?
Only double bonds
What puts kinks in a chain
double bonds and gauche interactions
What happens to oils in partial hydrogenation?
They become creamy
What is hydrogenation?
When hydrogen gas is put into oils to turn it into a fat
What are the two main classes of triglycerides?
Fats and oils
What is a trans (E) projection?
When CH3 is on opposite sides (two of the same molecules are on opposite sides)
What is a cis (z) projection?
When two of the same molecule are on the same side
Is a trans or a cis projection more stable?
a trans projection
Does CH3+CH3 or CH3 + OH repel more?
two CH3
Why can’t double bonds rotate?
because an atom would only experience 7 electrons instead of 8, and then it wouldn’t be stable
How many carbons have to be attached to a triglyceride?
an even number
