A
- Magnitude: 6.3 MMS
- created along a conservative plate boundary where the pacific plate slid past the Australian plate in opposite direction (occurred on a fault)
- only 10km deep (the focus) + 40km west of Christchurch.

IMPACTS
A
- Surface cracking + liquefaction
- roads + buildings damaged/destroyed
- More than 180 deaths
Although there was a lot of damage, businesses rapidly rebounded due to: - as manufacturing industries escaped significant damage - disruption to industrial production + goods exports relatively short lived.
- Rebuild costs = $20 billion - were largely insured losses.
- BUT - tourism was effected - dropped 40% visitors in 2011.
