  • Magnitude: 6.3 MMS
  • created along a conservative plate boundary where the pacific plate slid past the Australian plate in opposite direction (occurred on a fault)
  • only 10km deep (the focus) + 40km west of Christchurch.

IMPACTS

  • Surface cracking + liquefaction
  • roads + buildings damaged/destroyed
  • More than 180 deaths
    Although there was a lot of damage, businesses rapidly rebounded due to:
  • as manufacturing industries escaped significant damage - disruption to industrial production + goods exports relatively short lived.
  • Rebuild costs = $20 billion - were largely insured losses.
  • BUT - tourism was effected - dropped 40% visitors in 2011.
