- Caribbean and North American plates slipped along conservative plate boundary, that runs through Haiti
- Magnitude: 7 MMS
- epicentre was 25km west of Port-au-Prince (the capital)

IMPACTS
A
- 220,000 deaths - most killed by collapsing buildings, 300,000 injured
- 1.3 mil made homeless
- several hospital collapsed
- 30,000 buildings collapsed
- Airport and port damaged
- very few earthquake resistant buildings.
- little resources to rescue/treat people.

RESPONSE
A
- as its a very poor country - little money/resources to redevelop
- $330 mil from EU aid
- search + rescue teams from many countries e.g. Iceland
- temp field hospitals set up by red cross
- UN troops sent to distribute aid + keep order
- after one year - there were still 1300 camps
