climate:

A

1) pacific ocean: maritim climate overall
- - south island: cool
- - north island a little warmer
2) the combination of long sunlight hours, nights cooled by sea breezes and long ripening periods results in grapes :
- high sugar and flavour ripeness,
- retaining acidity
3) in the south the vineyards are located on the eastside, protected form westerly rain and winds due the mountains of the southern alps
- - there is still lot of rainfall, can be a problem during harvest and fruit set
- - luckely the soils are good drained and so the ground et not waterlogged(doordrenkt)
- — but those on flat lands are over fertile leading to excessive shoot and leaf growth
- — producers are experts in canopy management
4) ‘sustainable winegrowing new zealand ‘ is an initative that sets winery standards to help growers achieve these aims
