believe that state funded
schools lack competition NR have solution to unleash power of free - market + create parentocracy - consumer ( parent) takes power away from teachers
Education reform act (1988) = reflects NR ideals of raising standards through introducing league tables + ofsted
League tables = schools place academic scores on table , able to see highest and lowest scores
education operates on same principles as goods and market services individuals make own choices abouy eductaion same way make choices e.g. school becomes like a business as they respond to what consumers want and more resources go to most successful in attracting customers
Promote traditional conservative values (Section 28 of Local Government)
section 28 -School could not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with intention of promoting homosexuality or promote acceptance of homosexuality as family relationship
Encourage values of competition + meritocracy ( Murray)
education has become too soft. education is not fit for purpose, +lost sense of meritocracy by failing most gifted people. Education aks too much from those at the bottom and too little form those at top
too many people going to university + devalues higher education degrees - society is dependent on how well educated are academically gifted
promotes eductaion should be tougher and challenging, promote meritocracy - not everyone successful in education everyone else can be valued in less skilled vocations
Transmits and teaches vocational skills
new vocationalism - introduction of youth training schemes ,NVQs and GNVQs which allowed students to develop skills needed for future jobs through a vocational route rather than an academic
