Functionalist Flashcards
The Education System teaches social solidarity and value consensus (Durkheim)
Durkheim states that education provides social solidarity which is a feeling of unity and belonging based on shared beliefs. This protects the value consensus which is the idea that everyone is in agreement of social values and norms people have.education teaches everyone basic norms and values
The education system provides specialist skills (Durkheim)
Education ensures people have skills for specialised division of labour + teaches skills for future roles
The education system is responsible for secondary socialisation (parsons)
Education system acts as bride between home and work. There is a transition from particularistic values to universalistic values
Particularistic values = values specific to you + parents judge children by this
Universalistic values = values taught through education e.g.
Individual achievement - competing with others
Equality opportunity - everyone has equal chance
Role allocation - selecting + grading pupils for future role in society
Allocates roles ready for the workplace - Davis and Moore
argue societies need social stratification - attaches unequal privileges + rewards to diff positions in society , people differ in term of talent and ability, certain positions more functionally important than others
key function = match most functional to most important positions e.g. high rewards motivates people to compete + most talented will go through -essential for well being of society that functionally important positions perform roles diligently and conscientiously
