new right Flashcards
New Right - education
Pro-competition between schools (raises standards)
Schools do better if they take control of their own budgets - less likely to waste money
Having a National Curriculum meant that we could compare exam results to work out which were the best (highest achieving) schools
Focus on tougher discipline and traditional learning methods
Firm belief in meritocracy : work hard and achieve better results
what is marketisation?
Chubb & Moe
Argued that private schools do better because the school has to respond to the parents properly as they are paying customers
Running schools like businesses mean that parents become consumers, and demand better quality education which raises standards
What expression did Miriam David use?
Parentocracy
what is parentocracy?
Miriam David - parentocracy
She used it to describe the ‘parent power’ the ERA gave to parents.
They had the ability to choose their child’s school, as though they were shopping around for the latest product
Parents became powerful consumers, and schools became like businesses and shops.
Schools needed to compete between each other for their market share of consumers (pupils)
Chubb & Moe cont.
also argued that modern teaching methods (active learning) had failed - children needed tougher discipline and old school teaching
They argues that schools were too left wing, and were indoctrinating children into Marxist ideas
Schools were wasteful with resources as they weren’t running like profit driven businesses
