NEW - MUSCLE TYPES Flashcards
Identify the 3 different muscle types found within the muscular system?
1) Smooth
2) Skeletal
3) Cardiac
Identify the structure and function of the Smooth muscle?
Structure - The smooth muscle is non-striated and involuntary muscle tissue found in the walls of hollow organs, blood vessels, and various structures within the body.
Function - The smooth muscle is responsible for involuntary contractions in various organs and tissues.
Identify the structure and function of the Skeletal muscle?
Structure - Skeletal muscle is composed of muscle fibers, connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves.
Function - Skeletal muscles are responsible for the voluntary movements of the body, including locomotion, grasping, and manipulating objects.
Identify the structure and function of the Cardiac muscle?
Structure - Cardiac muscle is striated, involuntary, and branched, allowing it to contract and relax efficiently. It contains intercalated discs, which enable rapid transmission of electrical signals necessary for synchronous contraction.
Function - The cardiac muscle contracts rhythmically to pump blood throughout the body, supplying oxygen and nutrients to all organs and tissues while removing waste products.
