NEW - GLUCOREGULATION Flashcards
What is glucoregulation?
The process by which the body maintains stable blood glucose levels.
Which hormones are involved in glucoregulation?
Insulin and glucagon.
What is the role of insulin in glucoregulation?
Insulin is released by the pancreas in response to high blood glucose levels and helps cells take in glucose, thus reducing blood glucose levels.
What is hypoglycemia?
A condition characterized by abnormally low blood glucose levels.
What is hyperglycemia?
A condition characterized by abnormally high blood glucose levels.
What is the role of glucagon in glucoregulation?
Glucagon is released by the pancreas in response to low blood glucose levels and stimulates the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream, thus increasing blood glucose levels.
