New labour continued the process of marketisation by allowing schools to specialise in certain subjects e.g becoming music colleges
Private finance initiative
Involves private contractors and the state jointly funding the building of new schools and colleges

1999 gov programme to improve early education and childcare in England in offering up to two years of free childcare and early education
Education maintenance allowance
Gave up to £30 per week to students who stayed in education post 16. A series of bonuses were available for good attendance and progess
Education action zones
1998- local public, private and voluntary organisations worked together and combined their resources
Academies programme
Opened new schools in disadvantaged areas where existing schools were judged to be ‘failing’ - run in partnership with local sponsors

Observed that the class divide in achievemnt between working class and middle class students persisted throughout new labour’s term in office
Tomlinson
Observed that although the number of working class students in higher education has increased, class inequalities have actually widened since the number of middle class students applying to university has increased at a faster rate then the number of working class applicants
