What did the labour gov. Replace
The tripartite system with the comprehensive school system so the 11+ was abolished and all children in a particular area would go to the same type of school
Functionalist view on comprehensives
Promote social integration, social solidarity and meritocracy by bringing students from very different backgrounds together
Marxist view on comprehensive
Equality of oppportunity and meritocracy are idealogical myths since streaming mainly benefits students from middle class backgrounds

Reduce gender stereotyping

Patriarchal institution funnel girls into stereotypical subject choices which results in low status and low paid careers
Catchment areas
Urban areas are rarely socially mixed, people tend to live alongside other with similar social backgrounds - result in sink schools with w/c poorer families
Education priority areas
1967 - set up in deprived parts of London, Birmingham, Liverpool and West Yorkshire to provide schools with extra money and resources to raise poor children’s achievement and to encourage parental involvement in education
What was educational priority areas inspired by
Douglas believed that poorer parents were less likely than middle class parents to take an interest in the education of their children
Vocational education
1976- the labour prime minister James collagham made a speech saying that they British education was in decline because schools didn’t teach people the skills they need in work so introduced youth training schemes
Issues with vocational education
Some Marxists say that vocational training provides cheap labour and that governments encourage people into training scheme to lower unemployement stats
