1944 Education Act Flashcards
What did the butler education act introduce
Made secondary schools free for all and introduced the tripartite system where students took the 11+ which then seperated them into three types of schools : grammar schools, secondary moderns and technical schools
What was educational policy between 1944 and 1978 based upon
Improving the equality of opportunity so the British education system should be meritocratic whereby students are rewarded purely on the basis of their ability
How did the tripartite system create a class divide
Middle class students dominated grammar schools because they were more likely to pass the 11+ which wasn’t culture fair as it mainly benefitted those students with access to economic and cultural capital and labelled those who experienced material deprivation as failures
