शान्तनोः अष्टमः पुत्रः भीष्मः नाम ।
Śāntanu’s eighth son was called Bhīṣma.
एकदा भीष्मः शान्तनुम् आगच्छत् ।
Once Bhīṣma came to Śāntanu.
त्वम् एव नृपः भविष्यसि इति शान्तनुः भीष्मम् अवदत् ।
“You alone will become king,” Śāntanu said to Bhīṣma.
एकदा तु शान्तनुः नद्याः तीरे अचरत् ।
However, once Śāntanu walked on the bank of a river.
वायौ सुगन्धः आसीत् ।
In the wind was a good smell.
सः सुगन्धः सुन्दर्याः कन्यायाः आगच्छत् ।
That good smell came from a beautiful young lady.
यत्र यत्र सा नारी अगच्छत् तत्र तत्र सुगन्धः आसीत् ।
Wherever that lady went there was the good smell.
कन्याम् दृष्ट्वा का त्वम् इति शान्तनुः अपृच्छत् ।
Having seen the young lady, Śāntanu asked, “Who are you?”
कन्या अवदत् अहम् सत्यवती नाम ।
The young lady said, “I am called Satyavatī.”
मम जनकः धीवराणाम् नृपः अस्ति इति ॥
“My father is the king of the fishermen.”
