This essay will talk about how WW1, the industrial revolution, developments abroad, and pressure groups helped make Britain more democratic.
This essay will argue…
This essay will argue that WW1 was the most important reason why Britain became a more democratic country.
P1 topic sentence
The first factor to be discussed is WW1.
P1 backround information
Politicians were planning to change the rules about men voting as they thought that soldiers returning from the war deserved to be able to vote after fighting for their country. Also, throughout WW1 women did a lot of jobs men would normally do, like making weapons in factories, so politicians started to support giving them the vote after they did their part for the war effort.
P1 why important
It could be argued that WW1 was important in making Britain more democratic because politicians didn’t think it was right to not let men vote after they fought in the war. Also, WW1 got women the vote as it was considered a thank you for the war effort.
P1 why not important
However it could also be argued that WW1 was not the most important factor in making Britain more democratic. This is because during the war, it was mainly women under thirty who worked in the factories, but only women over thirty got to vote.
P1 overall
Overall, WW1 was the main reason why Britain became more democratic as both men and women were given the vote for their actions during the war, and also because soldiers coming back to Britain might have lost their ability to vote because of residence qualifications, and politicians didn’t think this was right, giving them a reason to change rules about voting.
P2 topic sentence
The second factor to be discussed is the industrial revolution.
P2 backround information
During the industrial revolution the middle class were created. The middle class owned new industrial sectors like coal mines and railways, and were becoming some of the most powerful and wealthy people in Britain. The industrial revolution also let the working class realise they were wealth creators and should have a say in how the country was run.
P2 why important
It could be argued that the industrial revolution was important in making Britain more democratic, as the middle class and working class started to argue that they should have more power as they created lots of money for Britain.
P2 why not important
However, it could also be argued that the industrial revolution was not the most important factor in making Britain more democratic as the industrial revolution happened almost a century before people could vote equally in Britain.
P2 overall
Overall, the industrial revolution was important in making Britain more democratic, but not as important as WW1. This is because the industrial revolution didn’t have a huge effect on changing rules about voting in Britain, as nothing happened for years after, whereas WW1 provided a reason to make Britain more democratic immediately.
P3 backround information
Between the 1700s and 1900s lots of political revolutions happened all over the world, including the Russian revolution in 1917, and the French revolution which resulted in more democracy across Europe. As this happened, lots of politicians would prefer to give limited political reforms than risk a revolution.
