The first factor to be discussed is WW1
P1 backround information - men
Politicians were planning to change the rules about men voting, and lots of people thought that soldiers returning from the war deserved to be able to vote after fighting for their country.
P1 backround information - women
Also, throughout WW1 women did a lot of jobs men would have done, so politicians started to support them getting the vote. They thought this made up for the suffragette campaigns that didn’t do well and made politicians think women should’t be allowed to vote.
P1 - why WW1 important - men
It could be argued that WW1 was important in making Britain more democratic because politicians gave men the vote as they didn’t think it was right to not let them vote after they risked their lives fighting.
P1 - Why WW1 important - women
Also, WW1 got some women the vote as it was considered a thank you for the was effort.
P1 - why WW1 not important - women
However it could also be argued that WW1 was not the most important factor in making Britain more democratic. This is because during the war, it was mainly women under thirty who worked, but only women over thirty got to vote.
P1 - Why WW1 not important - men
Also, men had fought and risked their lives in lots of different wars, including the Boer war, and they weren’t given the vote for doing this.
P1 - Overall…
Overall. WW1 was the most important reason why Britain became more democtratic, as both men and some women weree given the vote for what they did during the war, and if this had not happened, giving them the vote might not have seemed so important, and people might have giving people the vote wasn’t justified.
