why some women got the vote in 1918 Flashcards
Into info
Before 1918, women weren’t allowed to vote as people claimed women were too effeminate and emotional to be involved in politics. Women were seen as weaker than men and were supposed to do traditionally female jobs like being housewives. Also, lots of people believed that women didn’t need to vote because they could influence their husbands’ vote to get what they wanted.
Into argument
There were many important factors in some women gaining the vote in 1918 such as changing attitudes towards women, women in the war effort, the suffragette campaign and example of other countries. Whilst changing attitudes to women in society was an important reason for some women gaining the vote this essay will argue that women in the war effort was the most important reason why some women gained the vote in 1918 and therefore this view is invalid.
P1 topic sentence
The first factor to be discussed is changing attitudes to women in society.
P1 info
During the 1800s women got lots more legal rights, like the infant custody act 1873, giving women a chance to keep custody of children after divorce, and the married women’s property act 1882 which let women keep property they owned once they were married. Also women got more involved in politics. Some women got to vote in local elections, or elected in local elections. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was the first woman to be elected as a mayor in Britain.
P1 important
It could be argued that changing attitudes towards women in society was important in gaining some women the vote because women being more involved in politics showed that they were capable and able, and should get to vote.
