New B10 Nervous System Flashcards
What is your internal environment
The conditions inside your body that must be kept constant or you organs and reactions will not work ( enzymes become denatured )
This is maintained by homeostasis
What is homeostasis
homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal and external changes
What is controlled in homeostasis
Body temp
Water levels
Glucose levels/ concentration
What do all controlled systems in your body include
All control systems include:
• cells called receptors, which detect stimuli (changes in the environment)
• coordination centres (such as the brain, spinal cord and pancreas) that receive and process information from receptors
• effectors, muscles or glands, which bring about responses which restore optimum levels.
How are the conditions controlled
Nervous or chemical responses
Function of the nervous system
The nervous system enables humans to react to their surroundings and to coordinate their behaviour
