neurotransmitters Flashcards
epinephrine
Also known as adrenaline
role in “fight or flight”
increase blood flow and heartbeat
used to treat low blood pressure in terms of emergency treatment for allergic reactions
Released during times of stress
Norepinephrine
used to increase alertness and attention
used to increase and maintain blood pressure in terms such as cardiac arrest, drug reactions, and blood transfusions
Released at continuously into circulation at low levels
GABA
Major inhibitory neurotransmitter
Slows CNS function, without GABA the central nervous could run out of control as there are no real ‘brakes’
Anxiety drugs sometimes increase GABA to produce calming effect
**alcohol intoxication increases GABA
Glutamate
Most common excitatory neurotransmitter
involved with learning and memory
Acetylcholine
Slows ANS activity
**Decrease correlates with Alzheimers
involved with: learning, memory, sleeping and dreams
Dopamine
role in arousal
role in mood “feel good hormone”*
voluntary muscle control
***oversupply correlates with schizophrenia
Seratonin
role in: mood, sleep, eating, temperature regulation
** undersupply correlates with anxiety and depression
lots of antidepressants have seratonin boosters to help regulate mood
