Measuring the Brain Flashcards
1
Q
What is an EEG?
A
- Electroencephalography
- This records WHEN electrical activity in the brain occurs
2
Q
What is an MRI?
A
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging
- uses magnetic fields
- shows brain’s structure and abnormalities
3
Q
What is a fMRI?
A
- Functional magnetic resonance imaging
- shows WHERE brain activity occurs by tracking blood
oxygen - used to determine if someone is aware but not
conscious by asking questions and comparing brain
activity to that of a normal person
4
Q
What is a PET scan?
A
- Position Emission Tomography
- Measures blow flow to active areas of the brain by tracking radioactive oxygen or glucose that is injected
5
Q
What is the invasive technique electrophysiology?
A
The study of electrical activity in the body
6
Q
What is the invasive technique microdialysis?
A
This measures neurotransmitters released in the brain
7
Q
What is the invasive technique lesioning?
A
This is intentionally damaging the brain to determine the role that specific part has in behavior
